Tips for Visiting on Free Entrance Days

These dates are perfect for planning a cost-effective visit, but they can also be quite busy. To make the most of your trip, consider the following tips:

  • Arrive Early: Free entrance days can attract large crowds, so arriving early can help you find parking and enjoy popular sights with fewer people around.
  • Explore Lesser-Known Areas: While attractions like Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Spring are must-sees, venturing to less-visited areas of the park can offer a more tranquil experience.
  • Plan Ahead: Make reservations for accommodations or campsites well in advance, as they tend to fill up quickly on free entrance days.

Best Times to Visit Yellowstone Based on Free Entrance Days

What you want to see, when you're able to travel, and, of course, weather are all major factors in choosing when is best to visit Yellowstone. Here's a breakdown of what each free entrance day can offer:

January: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Ideal for winter enthusiasts, winter invites visitors to experience the park's snowy landscapes with activities like snowshoeing or a guided snowmobile tour. This season is typically less crowded, providing a peaceful and magical atmosphere.

April: First Day of National Park Week

Spring brings mild weather and fewer crowds. With the reawakening of the park, wildlife is active, and you may even spot bears coming out of hibernation. Some higher elevations may still have snow, but the lower areas start to blossom.

June: Juneteenth

Early summer offers blooming wildflowers, active wildlife, and pleasant weather. While the park starts to get busy, it's still less crowded than the peak summer months.

August: Great American Outdoors Day

Summer is the peak season, with warm weather and all facilities open. This is a great time for family vacations, but be prepared for crowds and book everything in advance.

September: National Public Lands Day

Early fall offers beautiful foliage, pleasant temperatures, and fewer crowds than summer. Wildlife is abundant, and the park's geothermal features are striking against the autumn backdrop.

November: Veterans Day

Late fall is quieter, with cool weather and potential for early snow. Some facilities may close for the season, but it's a serene time to visit if you don't mind bundling up.
