The Science Behind Old Faithful

Old Faithful’s eruptions are driven by geothermal activity beneath Yellowstone. The park sits atop a volcanic hotspot, and the heat from this hotspot warms underground water. As the water heats, it becomes pressurized, forcing it upward through a narrow conduit until it explodes out of the ground as steam and boiling water. This process is remarkably consistent, resulting in Old Faithful's regular eruptions.

Historical Significance

Old Faithful was discovered in 1870 by the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition and was named for its consistent eruptions. It was the very first geyser in the park to acquire a name and has played a crucial role in the park's history, symbolizing the wild beauty and dynamic geology of Yellowstone.
